The American Express Platinum Reserve Credit Card Review

About the American Express Platinum Reserve Credit Card

The American Express® Platinum Reserve Credit Card is issued by American Express, it rewards you with Membership Rewards Points. This card is issued in Singapore, and a number of different frequent flyer programs can be credited with miles including Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer

Sign-Up Bonus

The American Express® Platinum Reserve Credit Card offers a sign-up bonus of 50,000 Membership Points when you sign-up which can be converted to 27,777 Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer Miles, a large spend of S$5,000 is required in the first 6 months.

Other Benefits – New Benefits as of December 2015

American Express has added a few new benefits that make this card much more valuable than previously.  The first addition is a free night at the following Capri by Fraser properties:

  • Brisbane / Australia – Studio Deluxe Room
  • Kuala Lumpur / Malaysia – Studio Deluxe Room
  • Ho Chi Minh City / Vietnam – Studio Superior Room
  • Frankfurt / Germany – Studio Room
  • Barcelona / Spain – One Bedroom Deluxe Apartment

Kuala Lumpur and Ho Chi Minh City are going to be the easiest options for cardholders in Singapore.  A voucher is received much in the same way as the Ascend KrisFlyer Credit Card.

One of the other additional benefits is Near-Away by American express which is meant to be a voucher for a boutique hotel in Singapore, but there are very few details.

You’ll also receive dining and drinking benefits including a free drink at certain establishments and a Far Card Classic membership.  A free Boingo membership is also included.

What is the Annual Fee?

Principal Card: S$ 535 p.a. (no waiver)

Supplementary Card: First 2 waived permanently

Bonus for Renewal?

There is no stated miles related bonus for renewal.

What Do You Earn per $1?

  • All spend: S$1 = 1.25 Membership Rewards (MR) Points
  • Bonus Spend at Platinum Extra Partners: S$1 = 6.25 MR Points

What are Membership Rewards Points Worth?

American Express Membership Rewards is effectively another rewards currency, and it has a slightly odd conversion ratio of 9 points to 5 KrisFlyer miles (there are also other partners including Enrich).  For KrisFlyer Members this means that the effective earning rates based on a conversion ratio of 9 to 5 are:

  • All spend: S$1 = 0.7 KrisFlyer Miles
  • Bonus Spend at Platinum Extra Partners: S$1 = 3.47 KrisFlyer Miles

You can find the bonus spend Platinum Extra partners here.  Note that Membership Rewards Points don’t expire.

How Does this Compare?

If you are a KrisFlyer member then the sign-up bonus is significant but requires a high spend, but it isn’t as high as others.

Conclusion

  •  Sign Up Bonus – 8/10
  • Ongoing Spend – 4/10

I’ve increased the sign-up bonus to an 8 mainly because of the large chunk of miles and the free night stay (although a limited selection).  The main drawback being the high annual fee which is an eye watering $535!

If you are (or not!) interested in the other lifestyle benefits of the card then you might rate it differently.  The ongoing miles earning potential of the card is low and it’s generally one that I would sign-up and get the bonus for before cancelling the card.
