It’s been a while since this post was first published and I wanted to update it as part of a series of family posts this Christmas. This is the first looking at the various frequent flyer programs and what the minimum ages for children they have. In general they start at 2 but many have specific rules.
Now you maybe wondering why would it be important for a child to start earning frequent flyer miles? I agree that it’s not likely that a parent would allow their child to use redemptions on their own but having extra miles is bound to come in handy when booking an award flight.
Is status important for a Child?
Generally I don’t see the downside if they do earn status then that’ll improve their earning rates (more redemptions therefore), give the ability to invite others into lounges, allow for extra luggage (great for those family holidays!).
Do all fares earn for Children?
No not always, check the fare rules but many infant fares do not earn frequent flyer miles. Because infant fares are usually a discounted or smaller percentage of an adult fare many airlines do not offer miles.
Which Airlines can children or infants join:
For Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer and Malaysia Airlines Enrich children from 2 years old can join, I’ve also taken a snapshot of some other airlines and their specifics. Note that some of the airlines like Garuda Indonesia and Finnair have separate programmes for children with different earning rates.
