There have been a few bits of big news from Singapore Airlines this past week but also Malaysia Airlines and Oneworld with British Airways recommencing Kuala Lumpur flights and increases in SIN-KUL capacity from Malaysia Airlines.
Increase in Capacity on the Kuala Lumpur to Singapore Route
Malaysia Airlines announced this week that it was going to increase capacity from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur. These are the additional flight times:
- MH619 will depart Kuala Lumpur at 2:25pm every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and at 2:45pm every Friday and Sunday.
- MH620 will depart Singapore at 4:35pm every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and at 4:45pm every Friday and Sunday.
- MH627 & MH628 will also operate 5 times weekly (instead of 3 times weekly) every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday
This change will come into service from the 27th of October 2014.
This is great news for those based in Singapore looking for some cheaper flights out of Singapore. I’ve noticed previously that the short-haul from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur had pushed up prices because the flight was full for the long-haul flight that I was looking to book.

Extra Availability for redemptions
One of the potential benefits for Malaysia Airlines Enrich members Is going to be an increased amount of availability for flight redemptions as the capacity increases for flights to London. In addition they’ll also be better connections to the British Airways onwards network. These redemptions will fall under the Oneworld Award charts so you’ll need to check out the Oneworld charts here.
More Competition for Malaysia Airlines
Up until now Malaysia Airlines has had a monopoly on direct flights to London from Kuala Lumpur, but with British Airways starting up this operation they’ll see some direct competition. British Airways also operates a premium economy class which could undermine Malaysia Airlines business class sales – much like what’s happened to Singapore Airlines.
I wrote a piece on the future of Malaysia Airlines in the light of what’s happened this year and the news which has been coming out over the last few months indicates that Malaysia Airlines will be withdrawing from Long-Haul international routes and focusing on being a regional airline, but drawing on the Oneworld network with codeshares like it has done with flights to the US.
