Over the last couple of days I’ve been searching for a cheaper option than the $S690 price on budget airlines to Bali for the Chinese New Year period. After not managing to find any other options I started to look at Economy redemptions on Singapore Airlines and it reminded me about a tip that I want to share with you.
Generally I don’t use frequent flyer miles for economy redemptions as they are usually poor value, there are of course exceptions and one of those is for flights that are expensive compared to their usual prices as well as on routes that are more exotic. So in the case of Singapore to Bali for Chinese New Year the prices are way above normal and I really couldn’t find a discount elsewhere. Of course if you book far enough in advance and are not looking for flights that are nearly full it’s not worth it check out my previous post for details:
Case Study – Redemption on Singapore Airlines
I was looking at flights out to Bali on the 17th of February and this was the result for an Economy redemption:
No Saver awards were available and only Standard for 2 of the 4 flights, I was specifically looking at SQ942. For reference the award chart that this uses is the following Singapore Airlines and SilkAir Award chart.
At the standard level the award chart starts to overlap with the saver level in business class so I decided to have a look at business class redemptions too and these were the results:
As you can see a Saver Award is available for SQ942 and the 17500 Miles is close to the 15000 standard award for the economy redemption – this is an easy decision for me to make I would opt for the extra few KrisFlyer miles to go for the Business Class seat instead.
The same trick also works where First/Suites are available when trying to redeem for business class, so always have a check if you are finding it hard to look for space. If you want a closer look at the award chart for Singapore Airlines or SilkAir here’s the link:
