Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) has another great Starpoints purchase promotion offering 25% off the usual price of the SPG points until the 15th April 2016. So you could get a cheap night at a hotel like the Le Méridien Chiang Rai Resort, Thailand:
This is the fifth in a set of guides on how to purchase miles and points to get yourself cheaper hotel nights or cheap premium flights. This guide looks into cheap hotel nights at Starwood properties (Sheraton, Meridien, ITC etc.).

Buying Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) Starpoints
You can buy Starpoints for either yourself or as a gift for family and friends. The annual purchase or gift limit is 30,000 points. The usual purchase price for the maximum number of miles is $787.5 USD, meaning that the points would cost 3.5 cents per point (USD).
During the current promotion you’ll receive the following discounts depending on the amount you purchase:
- Get 10% off 5,000-9,500 Starpoints
- Get 15% off 10,000-14,500 Starpoints
- Get 20% off 15,000-19,500 Starpoints
- Get 25% off 20,000-30,000 Starpoints
Purchasing 30.000 will therefore only cost 2.62 cents per point, a good discount.
This promotion is available until the 15th April and the SPG Starpoints can be purchased using this link:
Using the SPG Points for Cheap Hotel Nights
As the redemption for award nights is fixed you can work out what that value of the points. Starwood does have changeable rates depending on whether you are booking a weekday or weekend:
Category, Points Required, Points Cost (all figures in USD)
- 1 (weekend) 2,000 – 52
- 2 (weekend) 3,000 – 79
- 1 (weekday) 3,000 – 79
- 2 (weekday) 4,000 – 105
- 3 7,000 – 183
- 4 10,000 – 262
- 5 12,000-16,000 – 314-419
- 6 20,000-25,000 – 525-655
- 7 30,000-35,000 – 786-917
Generally it doesn’t make sense to redeem for anything beyond category 1 and 2 hotels as the cost of purchasing the points isn’t cheap enough. But for category 1 and 2 there are savings to be had:
Sheraton Mustika Yogyakarta Resort & Spa Indonesia– Usual rate 97 USD per night. Weekends could be as low as $52 per night by using purchased points.
Le Méridien Chiang Rai Resort, Thailand – Usual rate 124 USD per night. Weekends could be as low as $79 per night by using purchased points.
Four Points by Sheraton Penang Malaysia– Usual rate 94 USD per night. Weekends could be as low as $79 per night by using purchased points.
Sheraton Bandara Hotel Indonesia – Usual rate 141 USD per night. Weekends could be as low as $79 per night by using purchased points.
So at all of these hotels you’d be making a saving by purchasing the points instead of paying directly for the hotel, but note that you won’t receive any points for your booking.
As I’ve advised for the other guides, make sure that you check prices before going ahead with purchasing points for free nights, as there may be a sale or special promotion on. You can check the current offers on the SPG site here:
Generally I tend to purchase Starpoints for conversion to airmiles, and in particular Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, for more information on that click the link below:
